The Battlecruiser is still slower and can be ran down. The most important element being that the Banshee can now out-range Queens. ZvT: Queens become noticably worse against Terrans Air openings. Furthermore, they move faster off-Creep (at the speed of unupgraded Roaches). The regular Queen loses the Transfuse ability, but the Swarm Queen will receive Transfuse with the option to auto-cast it (however, it can not spawn Larvae or Tumors). The Swarm Queen will have more dps than the current Queen, has 6 ground range, 8 or even 9 air range and gain one additional armor. The way I imagine it the regular Queen will reduce a slight dps nerf and have both its ground and aerial attack set to Range 5. Now, there is a more expensive unit with that utility and this provides balancing knobs to the balance team without having to shuffle the Hydralisk to Tier 1.Ī decision is forced on the Zerg to pre-emptively commit resources to more potent Queens, or be greedy and risk playing the early game with a much weaker defensive backbone. It resolves the issue of all of Zergs mobile anti-air being tied to Queens. It forces Zerg to commit resources (most notably Gas) to access a stronger defensive unit. Whereas the Queen will be the macro-focused version and as such will have significantly reduced combat strength, the Swarm Queen, a 50/50 and somewhat time consuming morph from the regular Queen, will have more combat prowess. Here's my proposed solution: the Swarm Queen. They are a fairly cheap unit that you want a reasonable number of anyways. A Protoss powerhouse of a unit, low commitment, high impact and incredible defensive strength, nullifying a huge range of potential openers and even midgame aggression at the click of a button. The current iteration of the Queen is reminiscent of the Mothership Core. Further compounding the defensive strength of the Queen is the macro implications: A high queen count guarantees very fast Creep spread as well. There are no units in the early game that can effectively trade into Queens. It has become a staple in the Zerg arsenal and the linchpin for all of Zergs early game. Starting with Wings of Liberty, the Queen has slowly been getting buff after buff. The Swarm Queen comes with a small cost, most notably 50 gas, and thereby becomes a real commitment for an early game Zerg.Īs I explored several discussions related to my beloved Banshee unit, there was one consistent factor that came up: Terran has no consistent openers against Zerg besides Battlecruisers. By providing a stronger combat-focussed morph from the Queen, the Queen as a basic unit can be nerfed without leaving a glaring hole in Zerg's early game Air defenses. They limit too many aggressive options, are too safe and simple and at too little cost, sort of like the Mothership Core RIP.
